Norton Motorcycles has trademarked the name Combat in India, hinting at an all-new bike by the iconic bikemaker. Here’s what we think it could be.
While the most logical thing for Nortan (now under TVS’ stewardship) could do is work on a rival to the extremely popular Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Heck, after Triumph’s triumphant entry into the sub-500cc space with the Speed 400, that could also be a market that Norton might look into tapping. But given that the ‘Combat’ name was originally for a 750cc parallel twin motor that Norton had used on the 1972 Commando, it is highly likely that the Combat name could be for a roadster bike based on a brand new platform. We think this could potentially be powered by a 750cc liquid-cooled parallel twin motor.
Currently, Norton already has a 961cc air-/oil-cooled parallel twin engine on the Norton Commando, however, it is a really old motor. Considering that, the new one is expected to be a lot more modern and should power a bike that is more affordable in the bikemaker’s lineup.
Despite being the more affordable offering in Norton’s lineup, we believe that the Combat will not be designed as a mass-market product designed to rival the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and BSA Gold Star or even the upcoming 750cc bikes from Royal Enfield. It is more likely to be a niche product aimed at those who are enamoured by the legendary Norton brand.
Summing up, because of TVS’ takeover of Norton, and the trademark of Combat name in India suggests that it could come to our shores as well, but not anytime soon.
