It’s been a while since we heard more about Okinawa’s electric monkey bike

Okinawa is one of India’s foremost electric two-wheeler manufacturers. Over the years, its prime focus has been scooters. But back at Auto Expo 2018, Okinawa showcased the Oki 100 prototype, an electric monkey bike that looked like a scaled-down Ducati Monster. It was quirky, funky and eye-catching. But what exactly was it?

Okinawa tried its best to capture the Monster’s muscular appeal with the bulbous section where one usually finds a petrol fuel tank. The exposed red steel trellis frame uses the batteries as a stressed member, just like the Monster does with its engine. It also got a round LED headlight and a digital instrument cluster too. This was a great attempt at emulating the design that Ducati first showcased in 1993. However, since Okinawa went for a monkey bike and not a full-fledged motorcycle, the proportions do not quite add up.

The Oki 100 showcased at the expo was equipped with an electric motor capable of churning out a grand total of 3.3PS! Laughable? Maybe. But back then, Okinawa claimed that the Oki 100 could clock a top speed of 100kmph. Suddenly, the power figure does not seem too important, right? Plus, with 72V 63Ah lithium-ion batteries on board, the Oki 100 had a claimed range of 150km and even a full charging time of just 2 hours.

The Oki 100 even received a USD fork and a rear monoshock to take care of suspension duties. Stopping power too was impressive as it had a large disc with a single twin-piston caliper at both ends.

It has been 24 months since we have received any update on the Oki 100, but there are rumours that this bike will be officially launched in the first quarter of this year. Expect Okinawa to price it competitively, with a sub-Rs 1 lakh price. Excited much?
