The hatchbacks, which were once the most welcomed segment among Indian buyers, are now facing an unprecedented slowdown. This can be traced to the handful of launches this year, which included just three new models in this segment. Unlike sedans, hatchbacks were considered rather more driving-friendly as well as pocket-friendly, particularly on Indian roads. So, what has caused carmakers to hold back from going all out in manufacturing more of these? Let’s investigate.
While India has seen immense growth in expressways and highways lately, city road conditions in many parts of the country remain poor, making hatchbacks less desirable. Their low ground clearance often leads to underbody damage on rough roads, making maintenance a concern.
Unlike road conditions, the one good thing in recent times has been the rising gross income among Indians which has reduced affordability concerns. That said, the affordable hatchbacks have fallen prey to this cause.
The hardest blow comes from the consistent rise in the popularity of SUVs among the Indian masses. The demand has consistently increased, hence prompting car manufacturers to capitalize on the same by going all-guns on the SUV segment. We now have micro SUVs and sub-4m SUVs that even alternate hatchbacks with near similar price tags. The sedans have already fallen victim to this trend, and now it's the hatchbacks' turn.
