In the April of last year, Hero MotoCorp and Speedbrain GmbH, the German off-roading champs, formed a strategic partnership to form the Hero MotoSports Team Rally. This proved to be a very fruitful decision for both, as the team had an impressive run throughout the year. This included a 12th place finish at the Dakar 2017, a win at the India BAJA and a 3rd place finish at the Desert Storm. The team has also attained a 100 per cent arrival rate in all the rallies they have participated so far.
As expected, the team wants to continue this impressive run while promoting the sport in India and abroad. As part of this initiative, the team has laid plans on identifying new riding talents and nurturing them into professional rally riders. The first rider under this initiative is the Spanish talent, Oriol Mena Valdearcos. Oriol has over 13 years of experience in the World Enduro Championship and 14 years in the Spanish Enduro Championship. Highlights of his career include becoming the Enduro Junior World Champion in 2009 and winning the International Six Days Enduro as a part of the Spanish Trophy Team in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Oriol has completed two rallies so far. He made his debut at the Merzouga Rally in Morocco where he managed to finish 12th. In his next attempt at the Sardegna Rally in Italy, he earned an impressive 2nd place finish. The Spanish talent has already started training with the team for the upcoming Dakar 2018.
Speaking on the occasion, Oriol Mena said, “I am really excited to be a part of Hero MotoSports Team Rally. The way this team performed in its first year and at the Dakar was really impressive and I see a lot of synergy between what I want to do and the team’s vision. I am looking forward to training with this team and racing alongside JRod and C S Santosh.”
