After months of getting delayed due to the current global pandemic, Piaggio is finally back on track to bring forth its new maxi-style scooter: the Aprilia SXR 160. Production will be commencing shortly from the company’s plant in Baramati, with the scooter expected to reach dealers in the first couple of weeks of December. We guess the launch of the scooter will take place by the end of 2020, with deliveries starting from January onwards.

We were quite glad that Aprilia chose to go for a maxi-scooter format for its next scooter for India. While it isn’t a thoroughbred maxi-scooter, the SXR160 has the right proportions for it. The scooter has been designed in Noale, Italy, keeping in mind the aspirations and mindset of Indian buyers. Yes, this scooter is specially-designed keeping the Indian customer in mind.

It will also be the most feature-loaded Aprilia to go on sale as it gets a large full digital dash with smartphone connectivity, USB charging, LED lighting and a whole lot more. The bodywork receives a premium three-coat HD paint. Up until now, Aprilia had only shown the SXR160 in red (at Auto Expo 2020), but the company has shared the blue colour option as well, which looks equally appealing.

Powering this SXR will be the same 160cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine from the SR160 with no changes to the engine tune: 11PS and 11.6Nm. We do expect some changes to the CVT to make it more suitable for a wider range of applications and not just hooning. The foundations too have been revised to offer a comfier ride. Head here for more details on the new scooter.
