The Polestar brand had had a huge shift in philosophy recently. Until June 2017, the company was best known for adding shots of insanity into some of the most sensible cars ever made by Volvo. Later today, it will relaunch itself as a manufacturer of high-performance electric/hybrid cars, and the first product from their stable will be the Polestar 1.
For now, we know four things - its name, the company's new logo, what it will look like from the rear and that it will be a coupe. The design is reminiscent of the 2013 Volvo Coupe Concept but is closer to production form.
The Polestar 1 has been slowly teased on the company's social media pages since October 2, 2017 and after solving the jigsaw puzzle (you can see the final photo below) it seems like this will be based on Volvo's modular platform which also underpins the S90/V90/XC90. If you look closely, you may also see dual tailpipes hidden in the bumper, which points to the fact that this will be powered by a hybrid powertrain.
Considering the S90 is a large sedan, the Polestar 1 could be more of a GT than an all-out sportscar. Details about the powertrain, electric motors, range and charging etc. have not been revealed. It is also not known if this is a production-ready model or if it is still in concept form. From the only photo available, it looks very close to production.
While Polestar is moving in a new direction, it will continue to build performance variants of standard Volvo cars/SUVs.
