Until the Lamborghini Urus arrived, the word super SUV was synonymous with the mighty Porsche Cayenne. While the Lamborghini might be the fastest SUV on sale today, the spec sheet of the Cayenne Turbo is rather impressive in its own right - 550PS from a V8 and 0-96kmph in 3.9 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package)
While that may sound tempting, some might argue that the Cayenne lacks the panache of the Urus, or even the BMW X6 M for that matter. What Porsche needs is an SUV with a coupe-like roofline that robs it of any shred of versatility. And that’s exactly what it has built in the form of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
The Cayenne coupe follows the same recipe as its competitors, staying high off the ground and adding a coupe like roofline. The resultant SUV looks more athletic, almost like a bigger Macan we must say. The new coupe-like roofline is 20mm lower at the edges and has allowed Porshce’s engineers to give the Cayenne Coupe’s front windshield and A-pillars a sharper rake. It also gets new rear doors and updated fenders to accommodate the new design.
The new Cayenne Coupe also features a panoramic glass roof as standard and Porsche also offers the option of a carbon roof top in the interest of saving weight. Apart from the roof-mounted wing that debuted with the new-gen Cayenne, the Cayenne Coupe also gets an adaptive rear spoiler at the base of the rear windshield that can extend by upto 135mm at speeds of 90kmph and above to provide additional downforce.
The Cayenne Coupe shares its cabin with the regular version. So you get a typical Porsche cockpit. The dashboard is dominated by a massive infotainment system while the instrument cluster gets a large analogue rev counter flanked by two digital screens. The centre console gets a stubby gear lever with touch-based cuttons that replaces the cluttered setup seen in the previous-gen Cayenne. Also, the Cayenne Turbo gets a four seat layout as standard. A rear bench is optional, but if you are going to opt for it, you might as well buy the regular SUV.
As far as performance is concerned, the Cayenne Coupe gets two petrol engine options - a 3.0-litre V6 and a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. The former produces 340PS of power and 450Nm of torque and propels the SUV from 0-96kmph in 5.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package. The force-fed V8 has an output of 550PS and 770Nm and Porsche claims a 0-96kmph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 286kmph. While that’s still 100PS and 120Nm short of the Urus’ numbers, Porsche reckons it’ll be as quick, if not more, than the Lamborghini around the ring.
The Cayenne Coupe is expected to reach dealerships in key markets by May this year. In its home market, the Cayenne Coupe is priced from €83,711 (Rs 65.67 lakh) to €146,662 (Rs 1.14 crore) for the Turbo variant. If launched in India, expect it to be offered via the CBU route and priced at slightly above the standard Cayenne Turbo, which is priced under Rs 2 crore here.
