Two months since the concept, was unveiled, Renault India has finally gone ahead and revealed its hotly anticipated production-spec Kiger sub-4 metre SUV. It boasts sexy styling, will be loaded with features and comes with two petrol powertrains.
The Kiger will be based on the CMFA+ platform, which is the same underpinning as that of the Nissan Magnite. Still, the Kiger has its own distinct identity and borrows bits from other Renault models in the lineup.
It measures 3991mm long, 1750mm wide, and 1600mm tall. The wheelbase spans 2500mm and the ground clearance is 205mm. Thankfully, the production model retains a fair bit of the concept’s swanky silhouette. What grabs eyeballs is a bold grille similar to that of the Triber, combined with split LED headlamps like those on the Kwid. It also gets a cool set of 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and C-shaped LED tail lights similar to the concept's. True, the LED DRLs may not extend the entire span off the front-end like in the concept, but it’s still nicely placed at the corners.
Heading inside, the cabin is in a simple black theme, with up to 25 litres of storage space and a boot capacity of 405 litres. It will be loaded with features, like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Philips air purifier (optional), 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging (optional), Arkamys sound system, keyless entry and push-button stop-start, and wireless smartphone replication. Up to four airbags, three-point seatbelts, and a seatbelt reminder are some of the safety features on offer. Keep in mind that the Magnite has scored a 4-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
Powering the Kiger will be a 72PS/96Nm 1.0-litre petrol engine and a 100PS/160Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be standard across both engines, with an AMT automatic transmission for the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a CVT gearbox exclusive to the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Six body colors will be on offer -- Ice Cool White, Planet Grey, Moonlight Grey, Mahogany Brown, Caspian Blue, and Radiant Red. Expect the Renault Kiger to go on sale in March, at a price similar to the Nissan Magnite’s, which retails from Rs 5.49 lakh to Rs 9.97 lakh (ex-showroom). It will rival the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, and the upcoming Tata HBX.
