After the success of the Harrier in the midsize SUV space, Tata motors will soon enter the premium hatchback segment with the much-anticipated Altroz. While the Altroz has been spied on multiple occasions, the carmaker has now dropped a teaser of the upcoming hatchback giving us a much clearer look of the India-spec model.
The teaser which seems to have been shot on a test track sees the Altroz undergoing stringent handling tests. This includes hard braking, slalom runs for agility and high speed runs for stability on dry and wet road conditions. Could this mean the Altroz will be a fun to drive hatchback? Well, the teaser does hint at that, and we certainly hope it is.
The Tata Altroz will be underpinned by a new AlphaARC platform. It will come with three engine options -- two petrols and one diesel. The Altroz Geneva Edition had a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor from the Nexon that produces 102PS and 140Nm of torque. Apart from that, the Altroz will borrow the Tiago’s 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine that makes 85PS and 114 Nm as well as the Nexon’s 1.5-litre engine, albeit in a lower state of tune. Expect all of these engines to be compliant with the upcoming BS6 emission norms. Just like the Tiago, we also expect the Altroz to offer both manual and AMT options in the petrol, with the diesel getting a manual gearbox only.
Tata Motors has also retained most of the design elements of the Altroz Geneva Edition showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The sharp front end with the sleek projector headlamps, sharp lines at the side and the rising window line - all the striking elements have been carried over. The Altroz will also come loaded with kit to take on its feature-loaded rivals. It is expected to come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, a huge multi-info driver’s display, steering mounted controls and more. The Altroz is also expected to get a host of safety features including dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front occupants seatbelt reminder, and high speed alert.
Tata has also taken the official Altroz website live and with the launch expected by the end of this month, the Altroz will be Tata’s first attempt at the premium hatchback segment. Prices for the Altroz are expected to start from Rs 5.5 lakh and go up to Rs 8.5 lakh mark (ex-showroom). When launched, it will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, the recently launched Toyota Glanza and the upcoming Renault Triber.
