The compact sedan segment in India is on fire at the moment despite car sales falling on a Y-O-Y basis for months. The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire has gone on to overtake the Alto 800 as the country’s best selling car while the new Honda Amaze is boosting the fortunes of the Japanese car maker in India.
But let’s not forget that our very own Tata Motors is the real pioneer of the compact segment in India with the launch of its Indigo eCS compact sedan a few years ago and featuring a chopped boot to avail of tax benefits in the country.
Tata Motors aims to cash in on the reinvigorated compact sedan segment with the launch of its refreshed Indigo eCS that has been given a more premium appeal in terms of exterior and interior styling changes along with new equipment.
On the outside, the refreshed Tata Indigo eCS gets a new chrome grille, smoked headlamps, a restyled front bumper with chrome housings for the fog lamps, rear parking sensors, strip of chrome garnish on rear bootlid and new multispoke alloy wheels.
Inside, the face-lifted Indigo eCS gets dual tone interiors that now include a black dashboard with a silver centre console and clock housing. The door trim, A-pillars, roof and seats are finished in beige. The steering wheel is a four-spoke affair now and the glovebox is cooled and gets coin and pen holders. There is a bottle holder on the driver’s side door and the driver also gets a one touch down power window switch.
Tata has also worked on the Indigo eCS to make it more comfortable to live with everyday by tweaking the gearbox for improved damping and easier gear changes, the suspension has been tweaked to enhance load distribution and NVH measures have been improved to provide a quieter and more comfortable ride.
Engine options for the face-lifted Tata Indigo eCS remain the same with the diesel model being powered by the 1.4 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged, common rail diesel engine that develops 70PS of power @ 4,000 rpm and 140Nm of torque @ 1,800 – 3000rpm. The petrol model is powered by a 1.2 litre, four cylinder engine that develops 65PS of power @ 5,000 rpm and 100Nm of torque @ 2,700 rpm. There is also a BS III diesel variant of the Indigo eCS available in LS and LX trim that is powered by a 1.4 litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine that develops 70PS of power @ 4,500 rpm and 135Nm of torque @ 2,500 rpm.
The Tata Indigo eCS is available in three trim levels for both petrol and diesel models with prices ranging from Rs 4.78 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) to Rs 6.03 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
