The Brazilian-spec Renault Captur (or Kaptur, whatever you prefer) was recently crash tested by the Latin New Car Assesment Program (NCAP). The result was a four-star rating out of five.
The variant of the Captur tested gets four airbags, ABS, ESC and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Out of a max score of 34, the SUV scored 30.27 in the adult occupancy area, which earned it four stars. On the child occupancy front, the SUV got 33.68 points out of a maximum possible score of 49, scoring three stars out of five.
Right now, none of the Renault cars on offer come with more than two airbags. The now discontinued Fluence and the Koleos SUV had four and six airbags, respectively. The lower variants of the Duster sold in India without airbags were recently tested by Global NCAP and scored zero stars. This could change in the near future once the crash test norms go live in India. Renault and other carmakers may then start offering airbags as standard equipment to improve their safety ratings.
Commenting on the Renault Captur's performance, Alejandro Furas, secretary general of Latin NCAP said, "The Captur shows the potential of local industry to produce and offer safer cars that exceed governmental requirements and that perform good with today's tougher protocol. Renault should be proud to show their consumers the crash test result of the Captur. We encourage Renault and other manufacturers to keep improving their model ranges to achieve four and five stars".
The Captur is expected to make it to India either by the end of this year or around the 2018 Auto Expo. Powertrain options are likely to be similar to the Duster. The 1.5-litre petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engine will offer adequate performance and give the French carmaker a price advantage. The SUV will sit above the utilitarian Duster and compete with the Hyundai Tucson and the Honda CR-V and become Renault's new flagship model.
