The long overdue crossover from Renault is finally ready for launch. After months of waiting, we finally received confirmation that the Renault Captur will be launched in India. What's more exciting is the fact that this all-new crossover will arrive in the market this year itself. But, what exactly is the Renault Captur and should you be paying any attention to it? Check out all details and decide for yourself.
What Is It?
The Renault Captur, also known as the Kaptur in the Russian market, is an all-new crossover from the French carmaker. In India, the Captur will be positioned above the Duster. This not only means that it will be bigger in terms of dimensions, but will also receive premium features that the Duster currently lacks.
The India-bound Captur should not be confused for the crossover sold in Europe with the same name. While the Euro-spec Captur is based on the Clio hatchback’s ‘B’ platform, the India-bound crossover that is already on sale in Russia and Brazil is based on the Duster’s ‘B0’ platform, which is essentially a long wheelbase version of the Clio’s platform. Though the India-bound crossover looks similar to the one sold in Europe, a closer look will reveal that the bumpers, headlamps and the rear quarter glass are different.
Bigger Than The Duster... But By How Much?
Since the India-spec Captur is expected to be identical to the Russia-spec Kaptur, we expect the dimensions to be similar. The Kaptur sold in Russia is 4333mm long, 1813mm wide, 1613mm tall. The wheelbase measures 2673mm. These dimensions are 18mm longer, 9mm slimmer and 82mm shorter that the Duster. However, the wheelbase and ground clearance (205mm) are on par with the popular SUV.
The major difference, however, is in the rated boot capacity of the crossover and the SUV. While the Duster boasts a boot space of 475 litres, the Kaptur gets a smaller 387-litre boot. But while the Duster’s boot space can be expanded to 1064 litres by folding the rear seats, the Captur can accommodate 1200 litres after folding the seats.
If you want to compare the Captur with other cars, check out the following table:
Captur vs Kaptur - What’s The Difference?
While the crossover was meant to be called the Captur, for reasons unbeknownst to us, the ‘C’ in the name was replaced with a ‘K’ when it was launched in Russia. However, in Brazil, it is called the Captur. But there’s nothing worth worrying about since we already know that we are getting the bigger version of the car spelt with a ‘C’, unlike the smaller crossover sold in Europe also spelt with a ‘C’!
So, Will The Duster Share Its Engines With The Captur As Well?
You bet. With the Duster finally getting an automatic transmission with both the petrol and the diesel engine, we can expect the same to feature under the bonnet of the Captur. The petrol is a relatively new unit - a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine that produces 106PS of power at 5600rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4000rpm. This engine can be had with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed CVT auto ‘box. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit and is available in two states of tune - 85PS/200Nm and 110PS/245Nm. Only the latter is expected to feature in the upcoming Captur. Expect the same drivetrain options - a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed AMT and all-wheel drive (AWD) equipped with the 6-speed manual - to be available with the Captur.
What About Features?
The Renault Kaptur sold in Russia is a fairly loaded car. Hence, we can expect the India-spec crossover to come with an extensive feature list as well. The Russia-spec crossover is equipped with climate control, cruise control and the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which are also shared with the Duster. The highlights, however, are the semi-digital instrument cluster, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, two-tone exterior paint options and cornering fog lamps. The large headlamps with the C-shaped DRLs and LED elements in the taillamps help it stand out as well. We will bring you the complete list of features that will be available with the Captur as soon as we get more details from Renault. So stay tuned!
Rivals and Price
If the 5-seat Captur crossover is launched with an all-wheel drive system, it will fall directly in the crosshairs of the Jeep Compass and the Tata Hexa. However, since the Captur and the Duster share a lot in common, we expect both the crossover and the SUV to overlap each other when it comes to the price. The Duster is priced between Rs 8.29 lakh and Rs 13.46 lakh. Hence, we can expect the Captur to be priced anywhere between Rs 13 lakh and Rs 18 lakh range.
