Renault India had showcased the Kwid 1.0-litre AMT at the 2016 Auto Expo. Since then, buyers have been eagerly waiting for the two-pedal variant. Now, building further on the large success of the Kwid, the French manufacturer has launched the AMT variant of the popular entry-level hatchback at an introductory price of Rs 4.25 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Notably, the AMT variant is available only in the top-end RXT (O) trim and costs Rs 30,000 more than the Kwid 1.0-litre manual variant.
In terms of looks, the Kwid AMT is almost identical to its manual variant. It gets the same unique SUV-ish design with a bold grille flanked by attractive headlamps. Dual-tone bumpers, stylish fog lamps and other body claddings further accentuate the imposing design of the car. The ‘Easy-R’ badge on the tailgate is the only give away sign that differentiates the AMT from the manual Kwid.
The interiors of the Kwid are well designed giving the feel of a bigger car when strapped inside. The entry-level hatchback comes with a spacious boot of 300-litre that can be further increased to 1115-litre by dropping the rear backrests. The Kwid offers some class-leading gadgetry that includes a 7-inch touchscreen MediaNAV system (Bluetooth, USB, AUX-IN and SDVC), digital instrument cluster and remote keyless entry with central locking.
Under the hood, the AMT gearbox is paired to the 1.0-litre mill that churns out 68PS of max power at 5500rpm and 91Nm of peak torque at 4250rpm. The 5-speed Easy-R AMT gearbox has been derived from the technology used by Renault in Formula 1. Remarkably, with the AMT gearbox, the Kwid returns an ARAI approved mileage of 24.04 kmpl which is even higher than its manual sibling which returns 23.01kmpl. Driving modes in the Kwid AMT can be changed with the twist of a dial located below the centre console. It comes with three driving modes Reverse – Neutral – Drive that has been ergonomically placed for easy usage.
The launch price of the Kwid AMT is introductory and is expected to go up later. In its segment, the Kwid AMT now competes directly against the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 AGS (Auto Gear Shift) and the manual 1.0-litre Hyundai Eon.
