Eyeing the Renault Lodgy? We suggest you head to your nearest Renault showroom soon as the French manufacturer is set to discontinue the diesel-only MPV next year. That’s because its tried and tested 1.5-litre DCI diesel engine won’t be upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms and Renault has no plans to replace this powertrain with a newer, cleaner engine.
The Lodgy’s 1.5-litre diesel engine is offered in two states of tune. The Std, RxE and RxL variants have an output of 85PS/200Nm and come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The top-spec RxZ variant puts out more power (110PS/245Nm) and gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Overseas, Renault offers a cleaner 1.5-litre DCi Blue engine in the global-spec Duster and Captur. However, this powertrain won’t make it to India as it has received a substantial amount of expensive mechanical upgrades to meet stringent emission norms. However, the Blue DCI powertrain is more powerful than the current DCI engine as seen in the table below:
1.5-litre Blue DCI |
1.5-litre DCI |
Difference |
|
Lower-spec |
95PS/240Nm |
85PS/200Nm |
10PS/40Nm |
Higher-spec |
115PS/260Nm |
110PS/240Nm |
5PS/15Nm |
Renault India will be the third manufacturer after Maruti Suzuki and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India to discontinue diesel models due to the upcoming BS6 emission regulations. When compared to petrol cars, diesel models require expensive upgrades to meet cleaner emissions, resulting in a drastic price hike for the latter. And carmakers believe this could lead to poor sales.
Renault's immensely capable Lodgy has been a bit of an underdog. Yes, it might not be as good looking as the Ertiga and the interiors are strictly functional. However, it gets the job done right as a people mover, seating six to seven people in comfort. Further, the DCI engines are powerful enough to haul a full load both on the expressway and on city roads. The Lodgy is priced between Rs 8.63 lakh and Rs 12.12 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Soon after the demise of the Lodgy, the Triber will be Renault’s sole people mover in the country. Renault will soon be updating the Triber with a powerful 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Currently, prices for the Triber start from Rs 4.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
