French carmaker Renault said on Monday, August 4, that a further unit sales decline of 0.6 percent in July was in line with forecast. "We had expected a drop in July - it was in line with what we expected. May and June were very good months. July and August are usually less good," a spokeswoman said. Renault brand registrations were down 3.7 percent while Dacia sales rose 38.7 percent.

She said sales of the compact Clio were "still strong, although not as strong as they used to be because it is at a mature phase of the cycle." The small Twingo sold less than in June when it was launched while the market for the Laguna flagship model was regressing. Last month Renault cut its 2009 sales target and boosted its cost-cutting plans as it braced for a tougher market in Europe after May and June vehicle sales proved weaker than expected.
