If you usually drive to work in your car, before firing up the engine, think about this – Is my driving position right? A number of times, this question would just be passed with the reason, “What has that got to do with my driving?”
Well, here is the reality. In case of an emergency when you have no option but to swerve your car to a corner and then slow down from your current speed, however, your hands are straight, will you be able to do that:? Where every fraction of a second counts, you would be readjusting before swerving and therefore wasting the precious little thing called reaction time between a mishap and a near miss.
There is no theory involved in keeping your stance right. The basic idea is that without losing out on comfort, you should have maximum visibility of the road. Resting your shoulders on the backrest and bending your elbows to a level where doing complete opposite clock turns (where your left hand can come the right hand’s position) is possible. In the advent of a hazard, you will be able to swerve with enough room and the right reaction time.
Don’t forget to fasten the seatbelt and make sure its not too tight or loose. If your seat does not have height adjust, don’t worry. Height adjust does give you that advantage if you are short, however, there is no need to panic if there is no height adjust in your car. Keep the backrest as upright as possible.
Earlier, when cars did not have curves, the basic rule was that you are sitting in the right position of you can see the other corner of the bonnet. This is not possible in cars today as they are more aerodynamic and therefore curvy. The alertness level in this position would be more.
Being attentive and driving at the right position are the most important factors that keep accidents at bay. Remember to keep your seat belts on at all times and get your car safety instruments checked regularly.
