Who doesn’t love Segway’s cool electric scooters? They are small, portable and, most importantly, they make you look cool in front of your friends. However, Segway has now decided to expand its range by introducing two all-electric dirt bikes, the X160 and X260. And as you’d have imagined, they are two electric bicycles that you can use for dirt biking.
Segway knows these e-bikes will be used for off-roading and so it has given both of them an exposed look where the only panels which could be damaged while offroading are the fenders.
The base X160 variant gets a 3kW motor which helps the bike reach 50kmph. Segway claims the 20Ah battery can be charged in 3-4 hours and offers a range of 65km. The top-spec X250 gets a bigger 5kW motor and a 32Ah battery, which the company claims can be fully charged in four hours. The manufacturer claims that the X250 has a top speed of 75kmph and a range of 120km.
What else do we know about the new Segway electric bikes? Well, they come equipped with an adjustable inverted fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. While the X260 gets 19-inch wheels, the X160 sports 17-inch units shod with knobby tyres. Combine all this with a wide-set handlebar and a relatively low weight of under 60kg (including the batteries!), the X160 and the X260 should be fun to ride on a dirt track.
Yes, it doesn’t have the exotic components like Ducati’s MIG-RR range, but it seems like Segway has chosen function over form. The new Segways get most of the bells and whistles that you’d find on an electric bike in this segment. So you get LED lighting, Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone compatibility.
Production of the X160 and the X260 will begin during the first half of 2020 with prices starting from $2,999 (around Rs 2.15 lakh) for the X160 model and $4,999 (Rs 3.59 lakh) for the X260. However, if you are a novice and want to start off with something affordable, then there’s our homegrown electric bike maker, Polarity, which has not one but six electric bikes to offer. Step right here then, because there’s one for every occasion.
