Skoda Auto has rolled out its latest tech update that warns drivers of damaged or slippery roads ahead via the vehicle’s infotainment system. Of course, the objective is to improve passenger safety. But how does this tech really work?
The system is based on swarm data intelligence, collecting and assessing various data points (from other users) with connected car tech. If it detects that you’re driving on slippery or damaged roads, the system will warn you via a notification on the infotainment system. It also saves the collected data on the navigation system to apprise you of potential safety hazards in the vehicle’s immediate surroundings.
Besides, Skoda will collect the necessary data from your vehicle’s ABS sensors and accelerometers. Suppose the sensor detects a wheel slip. It will then transmit that information to the cloud, following which Skoda sends it to the service provider. From there on, the data will be provided to other road users so they can either avoid that particular route or take extra precautions while driving.

Skoda says this technology will enable relevant authorities to get information and valuable insights into the quality of the roads. Also, once the bad roads are fixed, that information will be sent to Skoda’s database and updated on the navigation system.

Skoda says the initial rounds of data will be sourced from more than 1.7 million Volkswagen Group vehicles (with connected car tech) in Europe. This feature will be available for all Skodas that come with either the Amundsen or the Columbus infotainment system.
