Apart from being fuel efficient, Maruti's Smart Hybrid Technology has some nifty technologies for a fun to drive experience

In this hour of concern where sustaining the environment has become even more of a pressing need, the onus is on each and every one of us to do our bit to help conserve the world that we live in. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has also taken the responsibility to work towards this cause -- and a prime example of that is its Smart Hybrid technology. Let’s take a look at it.

A Peek Into The Smart Hybrid Technology

Models like the Ertiga, Ciaz, S-Cross, Baleno and the XL6 in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup come equipped with the Smart Hybrid system. This technology uses a lead battery to store energy and a compact lithium-ion battery for longer working life. This dual-battery setup combined with the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) saves the energy which is otherwise lost while decelerating/braking. Energy is stored in the advanced high-capacity battery setup to assist in acceleration. This results into a peppy, powerful and fuel-efficient drive.

Idle Start/Stop

There is an Idle Start/Stop feature that is directly controlled by the ISG which replaces the conventional alternator. This feature automatically turns off the engine when the car is idling. As soon as you press the clutch, the electrical energy stored in the ISG restarts the car again.

Brake energy regeneration

When a Smart Hybrid car decelerates, the ISG converts kinetic energy into electrical energy to charge both the batteries in the setup. This output increases when you apply the brakes. So, in a Smart Hybrid car, the system is generating energy even while braking.

Torque Assist

The ISG also has a motor function. The electrical energy stored in the battery drives the motor, which in turn assists the engine during acceleration, where fuel consumption is higher. This improves fuel efficiency and conserves fuel.

Maruti Suzuki, with its range of BS6 cars with S-CNG and Smart Hybrid technologies, is helping drivers migrate to greener mobility. The ultimate goal here is to shift all together to cleaner vehicles and help sustain the environment while reducing our carbon footprint.
