What comes to your mind when you think of a Subaru? A fun-to-drive car with bucket loads of practicality, right? This is what got them a cult status across the world. If you’re a Subaru enthusiast, we have some good news for you. The Japanese carmaker has revealed two new cars at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show: the Levorg and the EJ20 Final Edition. The Levorg is a station wagon that looks sporty and promises to pack a punch while the EJ20 Final Edition will bid farewell to the WRX STi’s horizontally opposed 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine. Sigh! Let’s take a close look at the two models:
Levorg:
Station wagons are machines that focus more on practical designs rather than a sporty shape. Subaru changes that with the Levorg station wagon, which looks drool worthy and bold. The front-end is dominated by a hexagonal mesh grille flanked by projector headlamps with prominent LED DRL strips. Just like a typical Subaru, the hood scoop can be found here as well. In profile, the Levorg comes with sharp character lines and dual-tone alloy wheels add flavour. Moving on to the rear, it comes with split LED tail lamps and a sporty bumper with dual exhausts. Considering the Levorg is in its prototype stage, Subaru is yet to unwrap its interiors. That said, the manufacturer has revealed its powertrain option.
The Levorg will come with a 1.8-litre turbocharged Boxer petrol engine. While specifications are yet to be revealed, Subaru has said the Boxer engine will offer a perfect balance between performance and fuel efficiency. As with all Subarus, the Levorg is expected to come in an all-wheel-drive format. Meanwhile, Subaru also revealed key features of the Levorg such as connected-car tech, GPS, hands-off driving support in traffic jams, and collision mitigation system. The production-spec model could see daylight by mid-2020 in Japan.
EJ20 Final Edition:
The EJ20 Final Edition is not a new model, but Subaru bidding goodbye to its 2.0-litre horizontally opposed engine that made its debut back in 1989. The Final Edition comprises the last 555 (remember that number plastered on rally Subarus?) WRX STi cars that will come fitted with the said engine. The 2.0-litre unit develops 308PS of power and 422Nm of torque. It sends power to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox — perfect recipe for enthusiasts. While these figures are not special at present, back in the 1990s this was one of the most powerful 4-cylinder engines.
Besides, the EJ20 Final Edition WRX STi also packs in a handful elements to diSTinguish it from its standard sibling. Exterior elements include 19-inch BBS forged aluminium wheels, red stripes at the front and rear bumper, as well as Brembo 18-inch disc brakes at the front and back. Inside, it comes with Recaro seats, carbon trim for the instrument panel and black leather trims.
So, if you want a classic with some proper Japanese breeding, we suggest you get in line as the EJ20 Final Edition is limited to 555 units only. Subaru, you should know there are many enthusiasts in India who love your cars and are waiting for you to come here.
