This Taiwanese scooter goes on sale in Japan for nearly Rs 3 lakh (excluding Indian taxes and duties)
  • It is powered by a 158cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled mill, producing 14.85PS and 15.44Nm.
  • Surprisingly, the claimed fuel-efficiency figure is 50kmpl!
  • It looks extremely edgy and racy.
  • The brand SYM is no stranger in the Indian two-wheeler market. This Taiwanese manufacturer has primarily been a scooter maker and had ties with Kinetic Motors to build the stylish SYM Flyte in India. However, Kinetic was bought over by Mahindra, ending SYM’s link with India. But if it were to make a reappearance today and wanted to showcase itself as a premium market player, its latest product -- the SYM DRG BT -- would be apt for the job.

What is the DRG BT? It is SYM’s latest (relatively) large-capacity sporty scooter meant to take on the likes of the Yamaha NMax 155 and the Honda PCX 150. Its edgy styling has us hooked, especially the front fascia with its split LED headlights flanking both sides of the beak. Look carefully and you will find the front turn indicators, which are LED units, neatly integrated into the panels beside the beak to give it a sleek and killer look. Even the grab handle is an extension of the side body panel.

Remove the plastic panels and you will find a typical underbone frame with a 158cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor attached to it. This motor produces 14.85PS and 15.44Nm, which is roughly the same power as the NMax 155, but the SYM packs more torques. And despite its sporty aspirations, SYM claims the DRG BT can return a fuel efficiency figure of 50kmpl. That’s pretty impressive!

To find a telescopic fork on a scooter of this size is a given but SYM has this one-of-a-kind mid-mounted preload-adjustable monoshock that is attached to a single-sided swingarm. Petal disc brakes at either ends are entrusted to bring this racy scooter to a grinding halt. Dual-channel ABS by Bosch comes as standard. The 13-inch alloy rims look a bit small on this scooter, but you get chunky 120/70-section front and 130/70-section rear tyres to lend it a bit of a sporty look.

SYM has priced the DRG BT at 4,09,000 Yen, which is roughly around Rs 3 lakh (excluding Indian taxes and duties). The arrival of the scooter is quite unlikely. We might as well omit it from the wishlist segment.
