Tata Motors has just taken the wraps off the India-spec Altroz in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Slated for an official launch in January 2020, the Altroz marks Tata’s foray into the premium hatchback space. It’s based on the ALFA Arc platform which will spawn a handful of Tata cars in the future. Tata Motors has kept the Altroz’ technical specifications under tight wraps for a long time, keeping us guessing about it. Now that it has been unveiled, we can tell you its dimensions, powertrain and the features on offer.
Dimensions And Kerb Weight:
The Tata Altroz is 3990mm long, 1755mm wide and 1523mm tall. It comes with a 2501mm long wheelbase. Top-spec variants stand on 16-inch wheels and the Altroz has a 37-litre fuel tank. Here’s a detailed explainer listing out the measurements, kerb weight and tyre sizes of the Tata Altroz:

Powertrains And Platform:
Under the hood, the Tata Altroz comes with one diesel engine and one petrol option, both BS6-compliant. The oil burner is a detuned version of the Nexon’s 1.5-litre engine that develops 90PS of power and 200Nm of torque. The petrol version comes with the Tiago’s 1.2-litre naturally aspirated 3-cylinder engine that develops 86PS of power and 113Nm of torque. Both powertrains come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission only. There are two drive modes -- City and Eco -- to alter the throttle response and engine characteristics. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol option and the automatic variants are expected to come later.
The Altroz is underpinned by the ALFA Arc platform. ALFA stands for Agile, Light, Flexible and Advanced Architecture. This platform will eventually spawn a host of Tata cars in the future.
Features:
The Altroz comes loaded with a plethora of kit to distance itself from its rivals. It comes with features like a 7-inch floating infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker Harman sound system, ambient lighting, automatic climate control, cruise control, a coloured multi-info display (MID), keyless entry with push button start as well as automatic headlamps and wipers.
Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts in the rear seat, rear parking sensors, rear view camera, driver and co-driver seatbelt warning as well as a high speed alert.
Prices And Rivals:
Prices for the Altroz will be revealed once it’s launched in India in January 2020. We expect it to start from Rs 5.5 lakh, going up to Rs 8.5 lakh for the top-spec variant. When launched, the Altroz will rival the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and the Honda Jazz.
