September 24, 2021 saw a milestone being achieved for Tata Motors, as the carmaker revealed that it has sold a total of 10,000 electric vehicles till date. Tata also holds the highest share of 70 percent in the electric passenger vehicle segment in India. Its EV lineup currently consists of the Nexon EV, the X-Pres-T and the recently launched Tigor EV.
Tata offers the Nexon EV and the Tigor EV for individual customers, while the X-Pres T is exclusive for fleet customers. The first two models are powered by Tata’s latest Ziptron powertrain family. Here a look at the model-wise specifications for the two EVs:

The Nexon EV, Tata’s first electric-offering, was launched last year. It is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 16.85 lakh, and holds the throne for India’s top-selling EV. Now, the Tigor EV could usurp it, as it comes at a more affordable pricing, ranging between Rs 11.99 lakh and Rs 13.14 lakh (ex-showroom) in the segment of EVs. Also, the Tigor EV has scored a 4-star safety rating by the Global NCAP last month.

Shailesh Chandra, President of Passenger Vehicle Business Unit at Tata Motors, said, “The achievement of 10,000 EVs on road is a strong testament to how our innovative electric vehicles are resonating well with customers. We are proud to have lived up to the high expectations of the early EV adopters and are thankful to them for their continued trust in the brand. These customers have laid a strong foundation for EV ownership to further expand and have created a path for other prospective buyers to follow.”
Alongside working on new models, Tata Motors is also working towards expansion of its charging network, with the help of Tata Power, which can boom EV adoption in the country. The carmaker plans to widen its EV portfolio by adding ten new EVs by 2025 including the Altroz EV, and possibly also the Punch EV.
While this milestone is a good moment for Tata Motors, the EV market in India is currently still in its development stage. That being said, many regular and premium carmakers have participated in the competition towards green mobility by introducing models like the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Mahindra E Verito, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron and the e-tron GT, catering customers of different segments.
