It’s Tata’s answer to the KUV100 and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis

Tata took the wraps off the HBX compact SUV at Auto Expo 2020. Slotting under the Nexon in Tata’s lineup, the HBX will pose a threat to the Ignis and the KUV100. A prototype version of the SUV was showcased and we’ll have to wait till late-2020 for the launch. Meanwhile, here are the 5 things you need to know about this Tata SUV:

Platform

The HBX will be underpinned by Tata’s Alfa ARC platform, which also spawns the recently launched Altroz premium hatchback. We know that the SUV is 154mm shorter in length, 11mm wider, and 28mm taller than the Nexon.

Styling

Despite being an SUV with a small footprint, the HBX looks butch thanks to its squared wheel arches and boxy proportions. The showcased production prototype features off-road wheels/tyres with a roof rack, further adding to the charm. The front, side and rear bumper also feature skid plates.

The HBX features a simple cabin design with rectangular air con vents. One can see a lot of part sharing. For instance, the steering wheel, infotainment system and the instrument cluster are from the Altroz. The dashboard also features a cool-looking compass and two leather straps.

Engines

The HBX will likely use the Tiago’s 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that develops  86PS /114Nm. It remains to be seen whether the HBX will be offered with a diesel heart. Gearbox options may include a 5-speed manual and an AMT.

Launch & Price

Tata is expected to launch the HBX by the end of this year. As mentioned, competition arises from the KUV100 and the Ignis. Meanwhile, the carmaker will probably price it from Rs 5 lakh.
