Hexa, the long-awaited MPV from Tata, has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The MPV was first showcased as a concept at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show. Tata has already been accepting booking for the Hexa since November last year. Based on Tata’s new ‘Impact’ design language, the Hexa is the second vehicle to carry the new direction in design after the Tiago. On the competition front, the newly launched Tata Hexa will battle it out against the likes of the Toyota Innova Crysta and Mahindra XUV 500.
The company has reworked its idea for its UV offering by leaving behind the typical Tata look for a more modern and attractive design. The Hexa (read full review here) carries a wide and aggressive stance which has been merged well with the profile of the car. It's only when viewed from the sides do you see the hints of the Aria. The UV features smoked projector headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) mounted on the front bumper and LED brake lamps at the rear. Other design highlights include plastic cladding with hexagonal elements around the vehicle, 19-inch alloy wheels, and chrome accents to give the Hexa the premium look.
Under the hood, the all-new Hexa comes with a diesel engine in two states of tune. The engine is a 2.2-litre Varicor, 4-cylinder, turbocharged mill that also does duty on the Safari Varicor 400. For the base XE variant, the engine is tuned to produce 150PS of max power and 320Nm of peak torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Apart from the XE, all the other variants – XM, XMA, XT, XTA and XT 4x4 (for detailed prices scroll to the bottom of the page) get a slightly tweaked motor that develops 156PS of max power with an impressive 400Nm of torque. For transmission duties, the XMA and XTA come with a 6-speed auto gearbox while the XM, XT and XT 4x4 come with a 6-speed manual unit. The XE on the other hand is the only variant to get a 5-speed manual gearbox.
In term of equipment, the Hexa comes packed to the brim with features that are almost never ending. To begin with, even the base XE variant of the Hexa comes with impressive equipment such as dual airbags, ABS and EBD, disc brakes for all wheels, all four power windows, manual AC with rear vents for all three rows, 12V power sockets on the front two rows, cooled upper glovebox, 6-speaker sound system with ConnectNext tech, projector headlights and LED taillights. Yes, that is quite a lot and the list just keeps on growing with the XM and XMA variants that receive rear parking sensors, heated wing mirrors, Harman touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition, ambient lighting and an 8-speaker sound system. While both variants get super drive modes, the XMA get additional hill hold control and sports mode.
Now coming to the top-spec variant – XT, XTA and the XT 4x4. Equipped with the exhaustive feature list present in the lower variants, these three trims of the Hexa come with automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment system coupled with a JBL 10 speaker sound system, 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, chrome accents on the exterior and fog lamps accompanied by daytime running lights. The XT 4x4 is the only variant of the Hexa that comes with a 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) system. For customer who wishes to further customise their Hexa, one can choose from separate accessories list or opt for any one of the three pre-designed kits, namely – Tuff, Luxe and Expedition.
