The automotive arm of the gigantic Tata Group, Tata Motors and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) have been jointly working on a project for two years, that will help to drastically reduce the country’s cumulative carbon footprint in the years to come.
To achieve this, two 2.5MW diesel electric power generator sets were identified for their conversion into dual-fuel generators. Using natural gas as the main fuel and diesel as the pilot fuel, the project has been successful in developing a diesel generator that runs on natural gas and light diesel oil.
The new power generation facility that will be operational at Tata Motor’s existing Pune plant, was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. P M Telang, Managing Director, India Operations, Tata Motors; Mr. Sadao Wasaka, Executive Director, NEDO; Mr. Tetsuo Tsuyuguchi, Managing Director, JFE Engineering Corporation along with other senior officials and dignitaries.
The Tata Motors Pune plant was selected for the project by the Government of India, the Government of Japan and NEDO, to produce power through clean environment technology. Through this project, Tata Motors hopes to bring down its cumulative carbon footprint in the country by reducing 3,770 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a year.
