Tata Motors has taken the wraps off the Nexon electric vehicle (EV) in India ahead of its launch in early 2020. The Nexon EV SUV is Tata Motors’ second electric car after the Tigor EV. It’s the first sub 4-meter SUV in India to be offered with an electric powertrain. The Nexon EV also debuts the manufacturer’s Ziptron powertrain. Tata offers the Nexon EV in three variants: XM, XZ+ and XZ+ LUX. Prices for the electric SUV are expected to be in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom India). Bookings for the Nexon EV will begin from December 20 for a token of Rs 21,000.
The talking point about the Nexon EV is Tata's new Ziptron electric powertrain. It utilises a permanent magnet AC motor that develops 129PS of power, 245Nm of torque and draws power from an IP67-rated 30.2kWh battery pack.Tata claims that the Nexon EV will offer more than 300km of range on a single charge. It also has a regeneration function which recharges the battery from the energy that's recuperated during braking/decelaration. Further, the battery pack supports fast charging, juicing it up from 0 to 80 per cent in an hour. The battery pack can also be charged via a 15A plug point as well. Tata Motors offers the Nexon EV with a standard warranty of 8-year/1,60,000km warranty pack for its battery pack.
The Nexon EV does 0-60kmph in 4.7 seconds and 0-100kmph in 9.9 seconds which is impressive. The powertrain has two drive modes -- Eco and Sport -- to enhance your drive experience.
The Nexon EV comes with revised styling elements, which will eventually make it to its ICE cousin as well. The front-end takes influence from the Harrier and comes with a sleek grille flanked by slim projector headlamps with DRLs. Below it is the new housing for the fog lamps which look more aggressive now. At the side, changes are limited to new 8-spoke dual-tone alloy wheels while the rear-end now comes with revised tail lamps.
Inside, the Nexon EV’s dashboard layout is identical to the standard model albeit with updates to freshen it up. The three-spoke steering wheel, coloured multi-info display, and the 7-inch infotainment display are shared with the Altroz while the round drive mode knob found in the ICE variant now takes duty as the gear selector in the EV. There are also plenty of blue accents to denote its green nature. There is no change in cabin space/ergonomics in comparison to the standard Nexon.

Features in the Nexon EV include Tata’s ConnectNext connected car technology with 30 connected features, cruise control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, climate control, a Harman sound system, a coloured multi-info display (MID), keyless entry with push-button start as well as drive modes. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX, hill descent control, hill ascent control, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, a high-speed alert as well as driver and co-driver seat belt warning.
The Nexon EV is slated to go on sale in early 2020, most likely at the Auto Expo which is set to take place from February 7 to 12. Its primary rival includes the Mahindra XUV300 electric, which is also expected to launch in 2020. Prices for the Nexon EV are expected to be between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom).
