The micro SUV will first be launched in South Korea and could come to India in 2022

  • Hyundai Casper will be the carmaker’s entry-level SUV.

  • Will be powered by 1-litre naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engines.

  • In Korea, both engines come with a 4-speed automatic.

  • The India-spec model could get different powertrains.

  • Expected to be priced from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom) here.

The upcoming Hyundai micro SUV, likely to be called Casper, has been spotted testing multiple times. Now, a document has surfaced online, revealing its powertrain options.

The micro SUV in South Korea seems to be offered with two 1-litre petrol engines -- a naturally aspirated and an optional turbo-charged. The latter puts out the same power as the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Aura Turbo. Both units are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Here are the specifications:

Engine

1.0-litre N.A unit

1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit

Displacement

998cc

998cc

Power

76PS

100PS

Transmission

4-speed automatic gearbox

4-speed automatic gearbox

If the Casper makes it to India, it will be positioned as Hyundai’s entry-level SUV. Here, it could be provided with a different set of engines, possibly the Grand i10 Nios’s 83PS 1.2-litre petrol, 75PS 1.2-litre diesel, and 100PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. The three should come with a 5-speed manual as standard and an optional 5-speed AMT (for the 1.2-litre engines).

Now, to the features. The micro SUV should pack a large infotainment system with connected car tech, steering-mounted audio controls, a wireless phone charger, climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start. Passenger safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors with a camera.

The carmaker had earlier announced that the Casper will enter production in South Korea on September 15. Here in India, we may have to wait a little longer; we’re expecting the micro SUV in 2022 at prices starting from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. It will square off against the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Mahindra KUV100 Nxt, and the upcoming Tata Punch.
