Tata Motors showcased its entire ramge of vehicles for the armed forces at the 2012 Defexpo. The showstopper was the Xenon Recce 4X4, a multi-purpose vehicle that will serve as a general service, troop carrier, escort, recce or a weapon mount vehicle. Powered by the trusted 2.2-litre DICOR BSIII turbocharged intercooled engine, the vehicle makes 142PS @ 4000rpm and weighs 2950kg with a power-to-weight ratio of 41PS per tonne and a top speed of 120km/h. The defence spec Xenon has a maximum gradeability of 32 degrees and works in a temperature range of -25 to 20 degrees.

On the occasion, P. M. Telang, Managing Director - India Operations, Tata Motors, said, "The launch of our new combat & tactical vehicles and equipment, leveraged from our strength in design and development of a wide range of commercial vehicles, now enables us to cover the entire defence mobility spectrum. Tata Motors defence solutions already covers the complete range of logistics and armoured vehicles that have also been popular in supporting the police and paramilitary forces in counter insurgency operations."

Added fitments include a 360-degree revolving LMG turret, jerry cans, mounting outside roll cage structure, self recovery winch at front, pick axe and spade, tow hook, black out lamps and convoy lamps. Seating a driver and three personnel that includes bucket seats up front and a bench in the loadbody facing inward for rear passengers, the vehicle is ideal as a light assault mobility solution for armed forces.

The company's defence division has been supplying its vehicles to the armed forces since 1958 and had a huge presence among other private players at the 2012 Defence Expo.
