Affordable performance headed your way in two delicious-looking packages!
Tata Tigor JTP

Tata first lured the enthusiast by showcasing the Tiago and Tigor JTP at the 2018 Auto Expo. The result of a partnership with Jayem Auto that began back in March 2017, the Tiago and Tigor have both received a turbocharger along with a few cosmetic updates to make them look sporty and distinctive. Both the sedan and the hatchback will be priced approximately Rs 1.2 lakh over their XZ variant, which means the Tiago JTP will cost about Rs 6.4 lakh, and the Tigor JTP will cost about Rs 7.2 lakh, both prices ex-showroom. And from tomorrow onwards, you can buy them from your nearest Tata dealership!

Diving straight into the performance, the JTP twins will get the engine from the Tata Nexon -- a 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol which makes 114PS of max power and 150Nm of peak torque. The standard variants run a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine which makes 85PS of power and 114Nm of peak torque. Mated to a 5-speed manual, these cars promise a sub-10 second 0-100kmph time. Dial in the fact that the Tiago and the Tigor JTP are considerably light and weigh 1016kg and 1051kg respectively, and these cars look to be a hoot, at least on paper. We will be driving them tomorrow before the launch, so stay tuned for a review.

In terms of exterior changes, both the cars look more aggressive and performance-focused with new front and rear bumpers. These feature wider air intakes along with sharper creases to look more sporty. There is also an offset hood air intake which just hits the spot in terms of adding a sporty flair. Look at the side and you have all-new 185/65 R15 alloy wheels on the Tigor and 185/60 R15 on the Tiago. At the back, you get twin chrome exhaust tips, which look uber cool. There is also ‘JTP’ badging on the grille, side apron and the boot.

In terms of features, the Tiago and Tigor JTP will be based on the top variant of these cars. This means that the cars will pack a touchscreen infotainment system, 8-speaker Harman sound system, steering-mounted controls, manual AC and power windows. Changes to the interiors include a red contrast seat covers, steering wheel stitching and JTP floor mats.

These are not the first 100+PS small cars in the market. There's also the Volkswagen Polo GT and the Maruti Baleno RS, neither of which fall in the affordable category. So, could the twin JTPs be India's first performance-oriented cars for those on a budget? Jayem ho, we say!
