Tata took the wraps off its upcoming hatchback in December last year. Called the Zica during the unveil Tata was forced to rechristen it as it shared the name with a virus that has affected million of people in South America. Late last month, Tata gave the Zica a new name, Tiago, which was decided with via public voting. Subsequent to it being rechristened as the Tiago, Tata will finally launch this new hatchback on March 28.
The Tata Tiago replaces the aging Tiago and will be launched with new petrol and diesel powerplants. The 1.2-litre 3-pot petrol unit churns out 85PS and 114Nm while the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder diesel unit make maximum power of 70PS and peak torque of 140Nm. Both these engines come mated to a 5-speed transmission.
In the looks department, the Tiago gets Tata’s signature smiley grille up front complimented by large spearhead shaped headlamps. The bumper sports honeycomb air-dams and it also houses circular fog lamps in the top-end trim. In profile the Tiago gets a sharp cut shoulder line and a horizontal character line at the bottom. The rear too gets an edgy design that makes the Tiago look smart.
On the inside, the Tiago comes with fresh looking interiors that can be partly customised with some removable panels. The large centre console gets a Bluetooth enable touchscreen, AUX and USB connectivity. With the help of a MapMyIndia app on your phone and the USB, you can also get navigation data on your screen. Other features include height adjustable driver’s seat, ABS, electrically adjustable ORVMs, steering mounted audio controls and more.
Tata was expected to launch the Tiago in January, but was forced to postpone it due to the naming issue. When launched, the Tiago will compete against the likes of the Hyundai i10 and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Expect the Tata Tiago to be launched at a starting price of Rs 4 lakh. Tata Motors has already commenced bookings for the Tiago. The minimum booking amount is Rs 10,000 which is entirely refundable.
