Range anxiety has been the biggest drawback of electric vehicles but if Tesla Founder and CEO Elon Musk has his way, this could soon be a thing of the past. Musk recently revealed to a publication that a 500 mile (805km) range car is possible quite soon but that will drive up the cost of the car. But over time Musk says that this kind of range could get common. Moreover, Tesla’s superchargers can communicate directly with the company and inform the driver about the nearest charging station and a queue at the station.
Tesla only last week revealed plans to build a car smaller than the Model S to take on the BMW 3-series. It will be called the Model 3 and will have a range of 200 miles (322km). Tesla says that their battery’s energy density is twice that of a Nissan Leaf and so it is possible to have a high range. Other factors working in Tesla’s favour is a low drag coefficient, weight of the car, efficiency of the motor and the gearbox and low rolling resistance according to Musk.
The Model 3 will be priced at $ 35,000 or Rs 21 lakh in the USA. It is about 20 percent smaller than the Model S. Tesla’s focus says Musk is not around driverless cars though like Google. Musk says that people should enjoy driving and they can adapt to different circumstances better than computers can.
