Limited to just 350 units, this road-legal version of the 570S GT4 race car means serious business
  • The 620R uses the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 from the race car.
  • This engine makes 620PS and 620Nm of twist with the 0-100kmph coming up in 2.9 seconds.
  • It is more powerful than the McLaren 600LT and weighs 1,282kg (35kg more than the 600LT).
  • Priced at £250,000 including taxes (Rs 2.33 crore).

Yesterday was a good day for McLaren fanatics in the country as we had revealed the Birtish carmaker’s plans to set foot in India. We also mentioned that McLaren’s next offering would be an AWD hypercar. Seems like we were wrong. McLaren has unveiled the 620R, which is essentially a full-blown race car for the road. Yes, sort of like the Senna’s younger sibling.

What is basically a road going version of the 570S GT4 race car, the 620R is the ultimate version of McLaren’s Sport Series offerings. Like other McLarens, the 620R represents the car’s output figures. It gets the same M838TE 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the GT4 race car. The absence of racing regulations has helped McLaren extract 620PS and 620Nm, making it more powerful than the 600LT. This also translates to the numbers. 0-100kmph is a 2.9 second chore while 0-200kmph comes up in 8.1 seconds. Maximum attainable velocity is 322kmph.

While the numbers are impressive, what’ll blow your brains out is the chassis and handling. After all it’s a race car in essence. It gets McLaren’s Monocell II carbon fibre chassis with a targeted dry weight figure of 1,282kg. The 620R also features GT4’s adjustable aerodynamics, race-derived suspension components and various other tweaks to boost power and performance.

If you’re nerdy about the specific tweaks -- the powertrain mounts are stiffer, it gets a lowered suspension with wider track, manually adjustable GT4 dampers, carbon ceramic brakes, centre locking wheels, low-exit stainless steel sports exhaust, lightweight interior with carbon fibre racing seats, 6-point racing harnesses, and a huge carbon fibre wing that develops 185kg of downforce at 250kmph.

The  620R comes standard with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres, with the option of full-slick motorsport tyres for the circuit. Standard colours on offer are McLaren Orange (with white racing stripes), Silica White (orange stripes) or Onyx Black (orange stripes).

All this comes with a price tag of £250,000 including taxes (Rs 2.33 crore). This price includes a vacation (driving class) at a race circuit to hone your skills. The best thing about the 620R is you can drive it down the road to get milk without getting pulled over.  Senna also does that but it also costs three times more!
