Yamaha recently unveiled the updated YZ450F dirt bike with a heavily revised engine, larger radiators and electric starter along with a lightweight lithium-ion battery. However, the highlight of the dirt bike is the addition of an all new mechatronics database that works on a wireless interface with the help of a Wi-Fi-enabled control unit. What this means is that riders can now quickly make changes to the fuel and ignition mapping for different riding styles, track conditions and changing weather through a dedicated app called Yamaha Power Tuner.
The level of adjustability provided by this simple bike tuning interface, the company says, will make riders more competitive on the dirt track. According to the company, it is the first time that such a system has been incorporated on a production motorcycle. The system also helps the rider to make notes on important parameters like the maintenance carried out, system diagnostics and engine running time, thereby create an overview about the bike’s performance.
Apart from the new interface, the 2018 bike also gets a new engine which has been heavily modified. Compared to the older bike, the 2018 YZ450F has a more upright riding position which helps in centralising mass distribution. It now gets a new lighter cylinder head, new cam profiles, new camshaft and a new high compression ‘box-bridge’ type piston. The bike gets an all-new aluminium bilateral beak frame which has been designed to improve balance and overall rigidity.
The new YZ450F also gets new radiators that are angled better to aid faster cooling of critical engine components. The bike gets revised gears with a wider surface area along with new clutch plates to offer more feedback to the rider. It also gets Yamaha’s Launch Control System which has been developed to provide quicker and smoother starts while accelerating hard. Suspension duties are handled by KYB shocks at the front and the rear.
The 2018 YZ450F will go on sale in Europe from August this year, but it is highly unlikely that the bike will hit Indian shores anytime soon.
