Over the last few decades GranTurismo has carved an enviable niche for itself as the premier racing video game, at least when it comes to PlayStation consoles. The game is as close as you can get to real-world racing from the safe confines of your couch, with its impeccably accurate real-life dynamics and feedback. And while some play it to escape reality and scratch their itch (or dream) of driving and racing a vehicle on the track, the game has simultaneously been a sandbox for amateur but serious racers to polish their skills and prove their worth on the professional front.
And when they do, it presents them with an opportunity to take those skills to a professional level, but the stakes become much higher here because it isn’t just professional virtual esports, it’s the apogee of racing in the real world.
After the likes of Uncharted and The Last Of Us were taken to the big screen, Gran Turismo has now become the latest PlayStation franchise to get a big cinematic adaptation, thanks to Sony Pictures Entertainment. But instead of the movie revolving around the game itself, it takes a unique real-life-drawn narrative as it’ll follow Jann Mardenborough, a now British racing driver that made it professional with the help of esports racing in Gran Turismo. Let this video set the mood for you:
What to expect
The movie draws light on how an ordinary teenager (Jann Mardenborough) obsessed with the Gran Turismo game got a chance to participate in a contest that would go on to change his life. The trailer includes glances at the roadblocks that he had to tackle, from upping his fitness to being accepted as a legit driver in the professional world of racing.
Expect tantalising racing action scenes ranging from GT-spec vehicles to Le Mans cars going at full blast, cocooned within a dramatic storyline. Jann Mardenborough signs for Nissan Racing to hone and train his way into becoming a racing professional, so expect a whole lotta screen time for the Nissan GT-R Nismo as well.

The movie is set to hit the theaters on August 11 and will prove that a few games are more than just that. And what better way to showcase that than a real-world success story that can be consumed on the big screen? So when the next time your parents or your partner comes around and complains about you spending too much time on the game, you can make a pretty compelling argument for yourself. And who knows, you might just make it pro if you have what it takes. Do you?
