The WagonR was first launched back in 1999 and has been among the top 5 selling cars for the last 10 years. It reached its first million sales in 2011, about 133 months from its launch, followed by another million in the next 79 months. According to Maruti, almost half of the WagonR customers are first time car owners.

R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki, said that,” since its inception, the WagonR has been ahead of its peers. Its comfortable seating, spacious interiors, superior fuel efficiency, practicality and pleasure of driving have made it a popular choice. To keep it strong, Maruti Suzuki has systematically upgraded the brand with new design and features. Needless to say, the WagonR has continued to top the sales chart. Despite intensified competition in the small car space, the WagonR continues to be the preferred choice of practical car buyers”.

Currently, the WagonR is offered with a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine, churning out 67.9PS of power and 90Nm of torque. The CNG-powered WagonR produces 59.1PS of power and 77Nm of torque and is available only in the base Lxi variant . The engine with both fuel options is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. An option of AGS gearbox is also available with the top-spec Vxi and VXi+ variants. The ARAI-tested fuel economy figures are 20.51kmpl for both manual and automatic transmissions.
