The Indian two-wheeler market underwent a lot of noticeable changes after demonetization and the effects can still be seen in various aspects. Here we take a look at the top five best-selling motorcycles of January 2017 which reflects some interesting variations as compared to the previous year. As we already reported in our sales report recently, the major players in the commuter motorcycle segment have recorded a steep fall. Taking advantage of this scenario, the premium segment gained its market share and the same reflects in the list of the top selling bikes. So, let's start the countdown.
5. Royal Enfield Classic 350: One of the most popular motorcycles in the Indian market right now, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 was at the third position in December 2016. However, the bike has fallen to the fifth position as commuters from Hero and Honda have started gaining their numbers back. Royal Enfield sold 39,391 units of the Classic 350 in the month of January 2017, which is an impressive figure in the premium motorcycle segment. The reason behind the Classic 350 gaining so much popularity is the enthusiasm related to this bike which is further promoted by a cult following for the brand in India.
4. Hero Passion: After falling to the seventh rank in December 2016, Hero Passion has regained its position in the market and has come much near to the podium, securing the fourth place. The bike has had a good history in the market with consistency in achieving the third position. The reason for its continuous success is the fact that the bike comes with sort of an assured reliability, evolved over the years. Not to take away from the fact that it flaunts a stylish, youth-centric design that appeals to those looking for a premium 100cc commuter. Though most of the Hero commuters have faced bad effects on sales due to the demonetization, effect on the Passion was worst as its sales fell to 24,672 units in December 2016. However, it showed a rapid recovery by clocking a sale of 56,335 units in January 2017. However, it's still lower than the 80,261 units sold during the same month last year.
3. Honda CB Shine: Honda took the best advantage of Hero's downfall, with an increased market space, regaining its lost charm in the 125cc commuter segment as well. Its best selling bike, the CB Shine, performed quite well in January 2017 with a sale of 70,294 units. While its biggest rival, the Hero Glamour is still struggling to get back on track, the Shine recorded a phenomenal growth as compared to the 20,213 units sold in December 2016. However, Hero is soon going to launch the 2017 Glamour models which will definitely make the battle interesting in the coming months.
2. Hero HF-Deluxe: The HF-Deluxe has a special space in the market as one of the most affordable, yet practical motorcycles that can perfectly satisfy the needs of the common Indian. Even though the bike sits pretty at the second spot among the top selling motorcycles of the country now, its sales saw a fall in December 2016. However, the bike has registered massively improved figures in January 2017 by clocking a sale of 1,22,202 units. The number is even bigger when compared to the 1,07,272 units sold in the same month last year.
1. Hero Splendor: We have become so used to listing this name on the first position that the last time any other name took the top spot is beyond memory. However, the Splendor also suffered a huge loss in its sales figures during December 2016 and if we talk about numbers, it was probably the biggest fall any motorcycle brand has ever recorded in the history of Indian two-wheelers. But India’s favourite bike has regained the throne with the delivery of 2,08,512 units in January 2017. With this, the Splendor has also reclaimed the position of the number one two-wheeler in the market, defeating the massively popular 110cc scooter -- the Honda Activa 3G.
