Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are a rapidly growing trend in India. At this year’s Auto Expo, we will get to see a host of new utility vehicles from manufacturers. SUVs populate nearly every segment in India, but newer SUVs push those boundaries further still. Here are our top picks of the top SUVs we are likely to see at this year’s show:
Tata has had us waiting for far too long for its Harrier-based 7-seater SUV. We first saw it at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Tata began testing the car on Indian roads soon after. The carmaker gave us a name for it last month. It is likely to be powered by the BS6 version of the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine. Will the two additional seats make the Gravitas a better bet than the Harrier? We can’t wait to find out.
The Haval brand from Great Wall Motors exclusively manufactures SUVs. Its premiere product in India could be the H6 SUV. This Tata Harrier rival is likely to be powered by either a 1.5-litre or a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injected engine. Once launched, it will have the MG Hector in its crosshairs.
Hyundai Creta

Hyundai’s new Creta looks like a mini Palisade from the front. It features a bigger footprint and a curvier aesthetic than the current generation. The SUV is likely to have more premium interiors as well. We hope Hyundai opts to revise the ix25-based Creta’s rear fascia before launching it in India.
Skoda/Volkswagen India 2.0 SUVs
It has been several years since we saw an all-new vehicle from Volkswagen. The carmaker is set to change that with the T-Roc SUV. It is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre TSI engine capable of 150PS and 250Nm. Don’t hold your breath on a diesel variant, though. The T-Roc will go up against the Jeep Compass and the upcoming Skoda Karoq once launched. According to Skoda's India 2.0 plans, the Karoq and Vision IN SUVs will also be at the expo.
Mahindra’s last electric vehicle (EV) was the e2O city car. Instead of creating a ground-up EV, the carmaker has wisely created an electrified version of one of its regular models. The compact XUV300 SUV seems to be the perfect platform to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Kona, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Tata Nexon EV.
