BS6 emission norms are just around the corner and manufacturers are busy introducing a host of new powertrains. Going by recent trends, turbo-petrol seems to be the most promising newcomer as it’s frugal, punchy and has similar characteristics as a diesel despite being a cleaner option and the fuel costing more. The Seltos Turbo makes up a bulk of Kia’s Indian sales while Volkswagen’s upcoming cars will now utilise TSI units. Here are the top five turbo-petrol motors in India that are worth your attention:

Hyundai 1.0-litre T-GDI: Grand i10 Nios, Aura, Venue, Verna and Sonet

Hyundai’s 1.0-litre T-GDI made its debut in the Venue and is available in two states of tune: 100PS and 120PS. The 100PS version powers the Aura and Grand i10 Nios Turbo while the 120PS version is found in models like the Venue and upcoming facelifted Verna. The 1.0-litre T-GDI engine is known for its punchy nature despite its small displacement. The 7-speed DCT paired with the higher-spec motor also does a decent job and is capable of giving a fun-to-drive experience.

Volkswagen 1.0-litre TSI: Polo, Vento, Rapid, Taigun, Vision IN

Volkswagen’s recently introduced 1.0-litre TSI engine, offered in the Polo and Vento, replaces its 1.2-litre TSI unit in the carmaker’s lineup. Despite the displacement disadvantage, this motor makes more power than the 1.2-litre unit. Interestingly, Volkswagen offers the 1.0-litre TSI with a 6-speed torque converter, while the 1.2-litre TSI unit made use of a DSG. Will it result in a duller driving experience? We’ll answer that soon in our first drive review.

Hyundai 1.4-litre T-GDI: Seltos, Creta

Hyundai’s 140PS 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine made its debut in the Kia Seltos. This incredibly refined motor became an instant hit from day one, making up the bulk of Kia’s sales. It’s known for its free revving nature and sporty characteristics. This motor is also found under the hood of the 2020 Hyundai Creta. Read more about the 1.4-litre T-GDI motor in our Seltos’ first drive review right here.

Renault 1.3-litre Turbo: Duster

ZW-Renault-Duster-Turbo

Renault recently showcased the Duster Turbo at the Auto Expo 2020. It comes with a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that develops 156PS of power, 16PS more than its nearest competitor, the Seltos. Interestingly, the Duster Turbo comes mated to a CVT option, making it first of a kind. The Duster Turbo, expected to launch by the festive season, will be the replacement for the Duster diesel. Yes, it’s quite a long wait and until then, the BS6-compliant petrol Duster is your only choice for now.

Volkswagen 2.0-litre TSI: Superb, Kodiaq and Tiguan Allspace

ZW-VW-Tiguan-Allspace

Volkswagen has introduced the new 2.0-litre TSI engine in the recently launched Tiguan Allspace. It develops a healthy 190PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This engine, which will make its way to the Superb and Kodiaq as well, is more powerful than the motor it replaces in almost all cars. We also expect it to score high on the fun-to-drive quotient just like Volkswagen’s other TSI motors.

Apart from this, Mahindra will also be bringing a host of turbo petrol engines for its upcoming cars. You can read about them here
