The testosterone-injected Fast & Furious franchise first hit the theatres back in 2001 and almost instantly became a fan favourite. After all these years of sheer adrenaline rush and a tragedy that left us gutted, the franchise is still going strong and has now come back with its ninth instalment -- ‘Fast and Furious 9’.
As always, we expect a deluge of gasoline-fuelled adrenaline in this one too. The trailer, of course, has swanky rides, which are probably going to blow up in the movie. However, despite their expected small screen-time, we brought you some of the top cars that we could get a glimpse of in the trailer:
1970 Dodge Charger R/T
This is the OG. There is no Dom Toretto without this beast of a muscle car, which made its series debut in the first film and ended up wrecked. Despite being spotted inside Dom’s garage in the trailer, it is still not confirmed if this specific model will eventually make it to the movie. Since its appearance in the first installment of the franchise, fans have been aching for some more action revolving around this hunk, especially some wheelies.
Nissan Skyline GT-R R34
The beginning of the final trailer shows a Skyline driving into the Toretto house driveway. For the unaware, that was the choice of wheels for Brian O’Connor, played by Paul Walker, whose untimely demise broke a million hearts worldwide.
Toyota Supra
The return of Han -- after he was presumed dead -- is undoubtedly one of the main selling points of the upcoming flick. And what better way to honour his return than putting him in the latest Supra that sports the same livery as the Mazda RX-7, the sports car inside which he died in Tokyo Drift (at least we were led to believe he did).
What makes it even better is that the Supra Mk4 also featured in the first film, making this a tribute of sorts.
Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody
This isn’t the first Charger to have featured in the trailers, and definitely not the last. The clip shows this one pitted against another worthy muscle car, which we shall talk about later. As is the franchise’s trend, we can bet it will be totalled, considering it picks up more than just scratches and dents as it takes off a cliff.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT350
While this hunk is one of the best to be birthed by the Ford-Shelby mashup, it is also a worthy adversary to the Hellcat it has been pitted against multiple times in the real world as well. In the trailer, the baddie rides this badass, but you probably can’t see him. It’s John Cena, you see. Or do you ?
The Mustang proceeds to jump off a cliff and is picked up mid-air by a jet with a magnet in what is truly a WTF! moment.
1968 Dodge Charger
Told you there was another Charger. We get to see another vintage Dodge muscle alongside the new Supra and what looks like an abominable heavy vehicle. It’s pretty easy to guess who is behind the wheels of this vintage beauty.
1974 Chevrolet Nova SS
After the untimely demise of Paul Walker, it was obvious that his arc in the series would come to an end. That, however, doesn’t apply to Mia (Jordana Brewster), because well, she’s Dom’s sister first, Brian’s wife later. And she’s ‘Family’, remember? Anyway, the trailer gives us glimpses of this classic beauty. I’m talking about the Nova, of course.
Noble M600
See Dom chatting with the Shaws’ mom while she’s skidding around in a purple sports car? That right there is a Noble M600, built by British carmaker Noble Automotive. It gets all the carbon fibre and is powered by a V8. It’s probably not a car for old people. Unless you’re Mama Shaw, maybe.
Honorable Mentions
We see Ludacris (or Tej, as he’s known on-screen) driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It could be the vibe of the series or the matte silver paint and yellow brake calipers, but this car doesn’t seem out of place in the trailer at all. At two points in the trailer, you also notice a red Dodge Challenger Hellcat and an Acura NSX.
Tyrese Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce, will drive around in a Jeep Gladiator pickup. There’s also a Pontiac Fiero, and to help it fit in, there’s a massive rocket strapped to its back. Something that looks like a failed science experiment.
Last but not least, and this had to be addressed. Is that giant 16-wheeler that flips over a truck? Or a bus? Or a trailer? How about an unruly child of all three.
Although the series may have strayed from being all about street-racing, it still gives us some impossible scenarios of cars being pushed to their limits and some delicious, adrenaline-pumping, seat-clenching action scenes. This love-hate relationship has almost become synonymous with the franchise, but that ain’t stopping me (or millions like me) from dashing to catch that first-day-first-show.
