The carmaker has come a long way from offering what looked like a ‘retired man’s vehicle’
  • The Aygo X Prologue crossover gets elements inspired by the current entry-level Aygo hatchback in Europe.

  • It has a sportier and funkier appearance in line with Toyota’s goal of making even entry-level models appealing.

Toyota has previewed a fresh look for its new crossover that could replace the entry-level hatchback in Europe, the Aygo. Dubbed the Aygo X Prologue, this concept crossover has been created by the carmaker’s European Design Studio with the aim of making even entry-level models look good.

The Aygo X Prologue definitely has the looks to impress, right from the first glance, starting with that mischievous grin it has for its headlights. The grille is flanked by two hexagonal-shaped fog lamps. At the rear, the tail lamps, which get a funky design, wrap around the glass tailgate. The 19-inch wheels too, seem quite out there, with the overly flared arches. If the word crossover makes you think small, cute, boxy, then the Aygo X will make you reconsider. It gets a muscular design with character lines that make it look aggressive yet amazing.

The crossover also gets rugged off-road design cues such as a wedged roofline, fog lights, prominent roof rails, and a roof-integrated spoiler. The rear skid plate gets a bicycle-holder mount and an action camera placed in the ORVM. Though the concept has quite a few exaggerated bits, including the 19-inch alloy wheels, expect the production-spec model to be sobered down a bit when it hits production.

The Aygo Prologue X has been designed for Europe and is unlikely to make it to India. Here, the carmaker’s entry-model is the Maruti Baleno-based Glanza. It would be nice to see Toyota do something like this in India as well, considering the competition has upped its game. Recent cars in the sub-Rs 10 lakh category such as the Hyundai i20, Nissan Magnite, Tata Altroz, and Renault Kiger sport impressive designs. Toyota should consider bringing in some cool designs to its entry-level models as well.
