Now distinguished by the 'D' suffix on its rear, the one and only GD variant of the Liva hatch is priced at Rs 5.54 lakhs going up to Rs 5.84 lakhs for same variant with the Safety Package option; the three trim levels on the Etios sedan will range from Rs.6.44 - 7.87 lakhs

The launch of two of the most anticipated mass market diesel cars from the Toyota stables is now a reality. The Toyota Etios sedan and the Liva hatchback model will now be available to customers in their new 1.4 litre D-4D 4-cylinder engine versions.

Toned down for more suitable driving conditions, the three-pot diesel on the Etios twins churns out 68 PS @ 3800rpm and 170 Nm @ 1800-2400rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with gear ratios optimised to give the best performance, while keeping fuel efficiency intact. The Etios sedan which is the heavier of the two small Toyotas has been certified to deliver 23.59 kmpl according to ARAI.

However, when it comes to the cosmetics, the two cars are far from being on a level playing field. The Etios seems to have gotten preferential treatment over the Liva since it gets three trim levels with the diesel engine, while the Liva diesel will be available only as an entry level ‘GD’ variant.

But even in its single attire, the Liva diesel will still give Toyota customers the option of choosing a safety pack that includes both ABS and Airbags for the driver and passengers, thus not compromising on driver safety concerns.

With bookings open for diesel version of both cars, the prices of the three trim levels on the Etios and the Liva hatchback are as below:

Etios Sedan: GD- 6.44 lakhs, GD (Safety Package) - Rs 6.99 lakhs, VD - Rs 7.41 lakhs, VXD - 7.87 lakhs
Liva :  GD - 5.54 lakhs, GD - (Safety Package) 5.84 lakhs
