It's been only three months since the launch of Toyota's star SUV, the fortuner. In these three short months, the SUV has managed to garner over 10,000 bookings, averaging over 3,300 bookings a month. Mind you, the prices for this SUV start from Rs 25.92 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Also, as expected, close to 60 per cent of the bookings have been for the Super White colour and, mechanically, the automatic transmission has been the preferred choice of buyers in both the 2WD and 4WD variants.
The Toyota Fortuner looked promising but was always going to face stiff competition from the Ford Endeavour. Though the fight is far from over, the till date sales figure of 5000 units indicates that the Toyota seems to be getting more and more popular with its target market. And with bookings on the rise, the waiting period for the SUV hovers around a couple of months.
The Fortuner is available in the country with a 2.8-litre diesel and a 2.7-litre petrol engine. The power output of the diesel motor stands at 177PS/450Nm and the engine is mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The petrol, however, comes mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed auto box and produces 166PS/245Nm. The 4X4 variants, though, are only available with the diesel motor.
Speaking about this milestone, Mr N. Raja, director and senior vice president, marketing and sales, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “The new Fortuner has received a phenomenal response from our customers and the market. A true testimony to this lies in the fact that even though the new Fortuner was launched a day prior to the announcement of demonetization in India, it did not dampen the spirits of our customers who have been waiting for the all-new Fortuner. We thank our customers for such an encouraging and inspiring start to this iconic brand’s second innings in India. We have noticed a significant pull for the automatic transmission in both the four-wheel and two-wheel drive variants. This goes to show customers’ willingness to upgrade to higher variants. We have also noticed a significant preference towards the colour Super White contributing to close to 60% of the total orders received. Right now, our main focus is to deliver the product to the customer at the earliest so that they don’t have to wait too long.”
The Fortuner and the Endeavour are quite similar when compared to one another. Not only are they capable off the road, but pack a lot of features along with convenience features and some serious road presence. To get an idea on just how close the pair of them are, have a look at our head-to-head comparisons of these Titans to find out which one is our pick.
