Based on the Baleno, the premium hatchback will be the first rebadged car for Toyota in India
  • Unlike the Baleno Dual Jet, the Glanza spied here does not feature a ‘Smart Hybrid’ badge.
  • Variant spied here is likely using a K-Series engine instead of the Dual Jet motor as speculated earlier.
  • Expected to be priced above the Baleno.
  • Gets minimal changes compared to its Maruti counterpart.

Toyota’s first premium hatchback for India, the Glanza, is set to be launched in India in June this year. According to multiple dealer sources, the Glanza is set to make its public debut on June 6. For the unintimated, the Glanza is essentially a rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki’s premium hatchback, the Baleno. When launched, the Glanza will be priced at a slight premium over the Baleno. The Toyota badged hatchback is expected to be priced between Rs 7.20 lakh to Rs 9.20 lakh (ex-showroom), and has already started arriving at the company’s dealerships ahead of its official launch.

Compared to the Baleno, the Glanza gets minimal changes on the outside. Apart from a twin slat chrome grill, both the cars remain identical all around. Even elements like the bumpers, door handles, alloy wheels and the detailing on the tail lamps remain the same as its Maruti counterpart.

The upcoming hatchback was spotted recently at what looks like a Toyota dealership/stockyard. Finished in red, the Glanza pictured here seems to be a top-end variant since it packs premium features like a touchscreen infotainment system and an engine start-stop button. The all-black dashboard and the layout of the switchgear seem to be the same as the ones seen on the Baleno. The only exception seems to be the steering wheel, which houses a Toyota logo instead of Suzuki’s. While the touchscreen infotainment system is expected to feature Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the Glanza also features a full-colour MID, steering mounted audio controls, climate control and more.

While the Baleno gets two BS6-compliant petrol hearts in the form of the 1.2-litre K-Series and 1.2-litre Dual Jet motors, it is likely that the Glanza will employ the former. We say this as the Glanza that was spotted does not feature a mild hybrid badge anywhere on the exterior. Additionally, the the Glanza’s engine appears similar to the K-Series motor found under the bonnet of the Baleno. The 1.2-litre K-Series engine produces 83PS of power and 113Nm of torque. Like the Yaris, we expect Toyota to offer two variants of the Glanza with a choice of a 5-speed manual or CVT. Both transmission options are likely to be the same as the ones offered with the Baleno.

While Toyota remains mum on the specific engine details at the moment, we hope that the carmaker offers it with Suzuki’s Dual Jet motor with a mild hybrid system as an option at least. The Dual Jet motor churns out more power at 90PS and 113Nm of torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual in the Baleno. There’s no automatic option on offer, at least for now.

The Glanza will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and the upcoming Tata Altroz. What do you think of the Glanza? Will you pick one up over the Baleno? Let us know in the comments below.
