You might remember that Toyota and Suzuki have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to share cars and platforms both globally and in India. You might also recall that the Baleno is the first badge-engineered car to be shared between the two Japanese automotive giants. Toyota has now released the first teaser of its version of the premium hatchback for India, called the Glanza. Expected to be launched in June 2019, with a showcase likely to happen as early as next month, Toyota’s first-ever teaser gives us some insight on what to expect from the all-new Glanza.
From the above teaser, it’s clearly apparent that the rear end of the Glanza looks similar to its Maruti cousin. The silhouette, rear door, door handles and the window lines all are the same as the Baleno. Yes, even the rims of the Glanza are similar to the Baleno, with the only difference being the Toyota centre cap replacing the Suzuki one. Heck, even the bootlid and the tail lamps of the Glanza looks the same as its Maruti cousin. And while Toyota is yet to reveal the front end of the Glanza, this is where we expect most of the changes. The Toyota badged car will get a new grille and front bumper and possibly a different set of headlamps as well.

As reported earlier, the Glanza for India will be available in two variants, which are likely to be a midspec G and a top end V variant in Toyota’s nomenclature. We expect it to boast plenty of equipment like a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, auto headlamps and more. Toyota is also known for equipping their cars with first-in-class features and considering the Glanza’s premium positioning, we expect some unique features like cruise control and front parking sensors to make their way here. Coming to the safety bit, the Glanza is expected to get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors as standard.

Considering the fact that Toyota will use the same engines as the Baleno in the Glanza, coupled with the fact that Maruti is pulling the plug on all its diesel motors by April 2020, we expect the Glanza to only get petrol variants. The Baleno comes with a 1.2-litre K Series petrol engine that’s good for 82PS of power and 113Nm of torque and a 1.2-litre Dual Jet petrol engine with Suzuki’s hybrid tech that produces 87PS of power and 113Nm of torque. While Toyota has the option to offer both the engines, we would strongly place our bets on it opting for the Dual Jet motor for the Glanza given the premium positioning for the new Toyota hatchback. Additionally, the Glanza is likely to come with both the manual and the CVT automatic gearbox on both the trim levels. This would make the top-spec Glanza a fully loaded automatic offering with the smart hybrid engine, which the Baleno does not have.
The Glanza when launched will be priced at a premium compared to the Baleno. Prices are expected to start from Rs 7.27 lakh for the lower-spec MT and go up till Rs 9.20 lakh for the top end CVT variant (ex-showroom). To get some perspective, the prices for the Dual Jet Baleno start at Rs 7.25 lakh for the Delta trim while the prices for the higher trim Dual Jet Zeta CVT top out at Rs 8.18 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from the Baleno, the Glanza will have to fight it out with the likes of the Elite i20 and the Honda Jazz. Both these cars also offer top-spec automatic petrol models, but a fully loaded smart hybrid automatic in the form of Glanza should add more choice for buyers in the booming premium hatchback segment.
