Something exciting may be coming from Toyota India around Diwali 2021, as an inside source has revealed that the Hilux pick-up is slated for a launch in India. Yes, you heard that right; one of the stars of the Top Gear UK TV show, and a name synonymous with the automotive industry for being one of the most reliable and robust vehicles around, could finally be making an appearance on Indian roads. Our source also revealed that the Hilux will be a locally built model, which should help Toyota price it competitively.
In fact this isn’t our first experience of the Hilux in India, as we already have some part of it thanks to the pick-up sharing the same platform as the Fortuner and Innova Crysta. But it is considerably longer at 5,325mm. Since it will be locally assembled, expect part sharing with other Toyota models, such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and similar front seats to the Fortuner.
Under the hood, the Hilux gets two diesel options: the Innova’s 150PS 2.4-litre unit and the Fortuner’s 208PS 2.8-litre unit. Both will get the option of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Aside from a two-wheel drivetrain, it also borrows the Fortuner's all-wheel-drive setup. Expect the 150PS 2.4-litre diesel engine to make it to the India-spec Hilux.
That being said, you might want to take this news with a pinch of salt, as we reached out to Toyota for confirmation on these plans, but the carmaker declined to comment on it. Since it’ll be locally manufactured, it could be priced between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). It will rival the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, which is priced from Rs 19.98 lakh to Rs 24.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
