The recently launched Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 is offered with two powertrain options - a 2.4-litre diesel and a 2.7-litre petrol. That’s right, Toyota has stopped offering the 2.8-litre diesel motor on the MPV and has instead added the option of an automatic gearbox with the smaller oil burner. While Toyota hasn’t officially stated technical specifications or the claimed efficiency of the updated Innova Crysta, our sources have spilled the beans.
The power and torque figures of both engines remain unchanged from the BS4 version. The updated 2.4-litre diesel engine develops 150PS and 343Nm, while the BS6 2.7-litre petrol unit puts out 166PS and 245Nm. However, what has changed in the updated models are the fuel efficiency figures. Have a look at the table below:
BS6 Innova |
BS4 Innova |
Difference |
|
2.7 Petrol MT |
10.59kmpl |
9.89kmpl |
0.7kmpl |
2.7 Petrol AT |
10.54kmpl |
10.83kmpl |
-0.29kmpl |
2.4 Diesel MT |
15.57kmpl |
15.1kmpl |
0.47kmpl |
2.4 Diesel AT |
14.88kmpl |
14.29kmpl (2.8 AT) |
0.59kmpl |
Save for the petrol automatic, all other versions see an improvement in their fuel economy figures. This comes as a surprise as BS6 upgrades tend to sap power and take away some of the motor’s efficiency too. It’s key to note that the 2.4-litre diesel engine was not available with an automatic transmission earlier. Therefore, the ~0.6kmpl improvement in efficiency over the 2.8 AT variant is nominal at best.
Prices for the Innova Crysta BS6 start from Rs 16.14 lakh and go up to Rs 23.02 lakh (ex-showroom). The Innova Crysta BS6 doesn’t have a direct rival. However, it straddles the space between the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the upcoming Kia Carnival, which is slated to launch at Auto Expo 2020. Other MPVs that operate within this space include the Tata Hexa and the Mahindra Marazzo.
