Toyota’s more powerful diesel gets the axe ahead of the BS6 deadline
  • The BS4 diesel engine was the most powerful engine on offer on the Innova.
  • It made 174PS and 360Nm of torque.
  • Toyota India has begun taking orders for the BS6 Innova Crysta.

Toyota India has discontinued the BS4 2.8-litre diesel variants of the Innova Crysta. This news comes in right after the launch of the BS6-compliant Innova Crysta. Earlier, two BS4 diesel engines were available with the MPV: a 2.4-litre and a 2.8-litre. The latter was the only engine on offer on the diesel variant of the Innova Touring Sport, which now gets the smaller 2.4-litre diesel engine.

The 2.8 diesel was the most powerful engine in the Innova lineup. It had a power output of 174PS and 360Nm of torque. This engine is also offered on the Fortuner SUV albeit in a torquier state of tune. In the Innova, the 2.8-litre engine was only available with a 6-speed automatic, while the smaller diesel engine was available only with a manual transmission.

The change in Toyota’s lineup may have to do with the pricing of the 2.8-litre diesel engine after BS6 updates. At Rs 22.43 lakh and Rs 23.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively, the ZX AT and 2.8 AT Touring Sport variants are the priciest in the Innova range. BS6 updates to the 2.8-litre engine could push the pricing into Fortuner territory.

The replacement powertrain for the automatic variant is the 2.4-litre unit, whose BS6 iteration produces 150PS and 343Nm, unchanged from earlier.

Toyota will concentrate on the 2.7-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel engines for the BS6 Innova Crysta MPV. However, the 2.8 diesel will be remembered for its effortless ability and surge of torque. The new BS6-compliant model starts from Rs 16.14 lakh to Rs 23.02 lakh. Rivals for the Innova Crysta include the Tata Hexa, Mahindra Marazzo and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in the lower end of the spectrum. It will also lock horns with the upcoming Kia Carnival.
