The record run was accomplished on public roads, south of Paris and in the Loir-et-Cher and Indre-et-Loire areas
The Mirai covered 1003km on a single fill of hydrogen, beating the Hyundai Nexo’s record of 886km.
It utilises an 174PS all-electric motor powered by fuel cells and hydrogen.
The second-generation Toyota Mirai has travelled 1003 km on a single fill of hydrogen, which is equivalent to a roadtrip from Mumbai To Bengaluru. In the process, the Japanese carmaker’s fuel cell EV has broken the previous world record of 886km set by Hyundai Nexo by a decent margin of 117km.
Sure, there’s a long way to go before fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) really come into their own. Still, things are surely looking positive at the moment.
The record run was achieved on public roads, south of Paris and in the Indre-et-Loire and Loir-et-Cher areas. The four drivers involved in this feat are Victorien Erussard (founder and captain of Energy Observer), James Olden (engineer at Toyota Motor Europe), Maxime le Hir (product manager of the Mirai), and Marie Gadd (PR manager of Toyota France).
What makes this record even more staggering is that the Mirai far exceeded its claimed range, which is up to 650km on a single hydrogen fill. More importantly, no special techniques were used that everyday drivers don’t have at their disposal. Hydrogen consumption averaged at 0.55 kg/100km (the full capacity is 5.6 kg).
The second-gen Mirai has an all-electric motor (that derives its power from 330 fuel cells) generating 174PS. Three hydrogen tanks are present that weigh a combined 24kg.
All in all, this record has been a shot in the arm for fuel cell vehicles, and it could further cement their claim of being a valid alternative to battery-powered EVs.
