The upcoming Supra is powered by a BMW 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six and there’s a good reason Toyota has chosen BMW’s trademark engine
Toyota Supra
  • Toyota Supra is set to make a comeback after a hiatus of 16 years

  • It will debut at the NAIAS in Detroit on 14 January, 2019

  • Will be powered by a BMW 3.0-litre straight six with upwards of 300PS

  • Will be mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox

  • A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine could also be introduced with a manual box.

Toyota has released a new teaser of the Supra with the BMW 3.0-litre straight-six howling in all its redlining glory. The video was uploaded via YouTube and shows a purposely blurred out Supra silhouette redlining and sliding around an enclosed area. You will also see a blurred out tacho at the limit and a few flybys by the Japanese sports car. But forget the sights, put on your headphones, set the volume high and drown yourself in the growl of the straight-six and the squeal of the tyres.

Speaking of the engine, it’s no secret that the Supra will be sharing it with the BMW Z4 M40i where we know it makes 340PS of max power but is capable of producing 374PS *cough* M340i *cough*. Toyota has confirmed that the Supra will make upwards of 300PS but whether it will surpass the power figure of the Z4, or even the ultimate 3-Series, remains to be seen. Could Toyota decide to go all out and make a GRMN version of the Supra? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long as the A90 is all set to make its debut at the NAIAS in Detroit in January 2019. In addition, a more affordable version of the Supra cannot be ruled out either.

The old car was offered with the legendary 2JZ-GE engine in two tunes - a naturally aspirated version making 220PS and a 2JZ-GTE turbocharged variant making 272PS. While BMW doesn’t have a naturally aspirated version of its 3.0-litre straight six, Toyota could opt for a smaller 2.0-litre four-pot engine that makes about 260PS for people who want their Japanese corner carver to be a bit more civilised. Plus, since the 3.0-litre straight-six will be offered with an automatic gearbox only, Toyota could offer the smaller engine with a manual gearbox.

Yes, the ‘baby’ engined Supra could raise some eyebrows. But with its claimed 50:50 weight distribution, it should still be a hoot to drive
